OFFF Barcelona
Funky Barcelona Panot Tiles
Projection Animation
Synopsis
For OFFF Barcelona 2026, held the same year the city was named UNESCO-UIA World Capital of Architecture, the studio created Funky Barcelona Panot Tiles, a looping projection for the façade of Disseny Hub Barcelona connecting the city's heritage with the festival's forward-looking design and technology.
The piece draws on the Panot tile, Barcelona's iconic patterned paving stone, including its recognizable four-petal flower design. The animation moves the flower and other geometric patterns from the sidewalk onto the vertical façade, using red and yellow, colours pulled from the Catalan and Spanish flags, as the shapes rotate, grow, and shrink to create rhythm across the projection.
Selected for The Screen, OFFF Barcelona's official mapping open call, from 735 submissions across 63 countries, the piece was projected on Disseny Hub's façade during the festival, drawing over 10,000 attendees across three nights.

Beyond the creative concept, the submission had to work within the strict technical presets set by the festival for the projection format, all while staying true to the studio's broader interest in treating culture as something living, not fixed in the past. Finding a heritage element that could speak to both the city's history and its architectural distinction, while fitting the festival's format, was the core design problem.

The studio's research led to the Panot tile, introduced in the early 1900s to solve mud and paving problems on Barcelona's streets. Building on the tile's flower motif and other circular, symmetrical designs, the studio moved the eye pattern, normally seen underfoot, up onto the vertical façade as a central image. Red and yellow, pulled from the Catalan and Spanish flags, were inverted for contrast as the patterns rotated, grew, and shrank within their grid squares, creating rhythm across the projection.

The project was selected for The Screen, OFFF Barcelona's official mapping open call, chosen from 735 submissions across 63 countries. It was projected on Disseny Hub's façade during the festival's run from April 16 to 18, 2026, as part of a curated large-scale mapping program with integrated sound design, drawing over 10,000 attendees across three nights.
